ELEANOR TURNER
APRIL 1, 1913
AUGUST 10, 2008
Eleanor was one of our Senior Saints here at Neapolis. She loved well and was well loved by all she met. When Christ said to “love one another” Eleanor knew that He was talking to her and put this into practice. She was devoted to her family at home as well as to her church family. Eleanor loved Christ and it showed. I spoke with Eleanor recently in her home and asked her about her life with Christ. Marilyn was present and wrote it down. This is an excerpt of that conversation. Eleanor was baptized on Easter Sunday, 1925, at age of 12. She was baptized by Reverend Simon Davidian at South Church of Christ, Toledo . There were 60 boys and girls in the class and they had a good teacher. The class had a lot of bible study. Even though it wasn't planned 30 of the group went forward and 15 were baptized that day. Another 15 were baptized the following Sunday.
Eleanor loved music and was a member of the junior choir at South Church . She was in the choir from age 10 to 18. Mrs. Harry was the choir director and didn't want Eleanor or the other girls to leave the choir when they got older. Mrs. Harry also had some of the girls involved in a singing class downtown Toledo at Summit and Cherry St . This is the neighbor that Eleanor grew up in. In Junior High School Eleanor followed in her mothers footsteps and began singing alto. Marilyn and Virginia were named after two sisters that were in the junior choir.
Eleanor graduated in 1931 from Libbey High School . Later she married Charles Turner and moved to Neapolis area were she joined the Neapolis Church . After many years of devotion to her faith and her church Charles became a very active member. Eleanor continued her joy of singing by participating in the church choir until the age of 80. Eleanor was also a member of the Kitchen Katies Band. From my understanding the Kitchen Katies were born out of a loss to the men over a drive to support the fire department. The Kitchen Katies was group of women that would play kitchen utensils to the enjoyment of many.
Eleanor is home now with her heavenly family. We will miss her but will be looking forward to seeing her again. I am sure that she now singing in the heavenly choir.
